Tips on using belly dance props

Props are a good way to enhance your dance and there is a great variety to choose from. I have listed below a couple of tips on using props.

1. Practising with finger cymbals –In order to become good at playing sagat, practising is necessary but the noise can disturb other people. A tip to muffle the sound of zils is to cut off the tip of old thights and cover each zil with one of the tights tip. You can apply it by tying the material around the elastic band. I got this idea from Morocco during one of her workshops; I tried it and it works.

2. Balancing a sword or a cane on your head – in order to make your hair less slippery, apply some hair spray on your hair. You can also tie a turban on your head, Dancing with props

especially if you are a beginner or you are dancing outdoors. Another idea for making a sword less slippery is to rub wax from a votive candle on it.

3. Storing a cane or a sword – make sure to always store these props on a flat surface, in order to stop them from warping. You can also hang the cane from its curved end or apply 2 hooks on the wall on which to place your sword (this way it will also become an ornamental item)

4. Belly dancing with candles – when you dance with candles, it may happen that the flame dies. A solution is to keep at the front of the stage a source of fire, such as a candle. If then you need to relight the candle you are dancing with, you can use the candle at the front of the stage to light it. Of course, you will need to pretend that you are doing this on purpose and make the whole process look like part of the dance, with elegant flowing movements and similar.
